When you think of Central Florida, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind are those giant mouse ears—Mickey Mouse ears, that is. And then immediately following are the slew of amusement parks: the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the iconic Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Sea World. Along with the hustling and bustling tourist strip that is I-drive and Pointe Orlando. However, if you take a short and easy drive, you can find yourself in one of the numerous small and historic towns of Central Florida.
The beautiful, brick-paved Park Avenue, lined with quaint coffee shops, adorable and fashion-forward boutiques, art galleries, and museums can be found in Winter Park, an upscale Central Florida small town found slightly northeast of Downtown Orlando. Winter Park has an extensive and rich history, traced back to the late 1800’s, much of which can be learned about throughout the town and in its local museums.
As with many of the old Florida towns, Winter Park is adorned with narrow and mazy brick streets and shaded by considerable live oaks, draped with long and sinewy Spanish Moss that sways with the breeze. It certainly is a postcard perfect town that is prized for its old beauty and impressive prosperity. This town has fought hard to make sure that the larger metropolises surrounding it don’t effect the quiet charm that has been attached to the area since its founding, the city government actively working to make sure that the busy city traffic has as little effect on this town as possibly by keeping the famed brick-paved roads, lowering speed limits, and strictly enforcing the traffic laws. In doing so, this government has successfully maintained the appeal and charisma of a small, suburban town, even when smack dab in the middle of several large urban cities.

And so, without a doubt, Winter Park is an ideal area for raising a family. There truly is something for every single member of your family, no matter what age. A highly esteemed Community Center was opened in 2011 and includes amenities such as a state-of-the-art fitness center, full-sized basketball courts, media center, outdoor amphitheater, and pool. This community center even offers camps and afterschool programs for children up to their 8th grade year in middle school. For the high schooler in your family, they offer a Junior Counselor Program that allows your teen the opportunity to gain leadership abilities and job training. They even offer programs for adults, such as Zumba and a Men’s Basketball League.
Every single Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the heart of Winter Park, you will find the Winter Park Farmers Market. This farmer’s market is held in the old and historic train depot of Winter Park that was refurbished and restored to the former beauty of its glory days. For years, it has been named the number one farmer’s market to find produce and plants. In addition to this weekly community get-together, Winter Park also hold several long-standing festivals including the Sidewalk Art Festival. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the United States’ oldest and largest outdoor art festivals.
For all that this town has to offer, we cannot forget its incredible educational institutions. Rollins College, founded in 1885, is as old as the town of Winter Park and is, undoubtedly, a large piece of its inherent foundation. It is ranked top in the nation not only educationally, but aesthetically as well. It is certainly one of the most beautiful college campuses that grace not just the state of Florida, but the nation itself. Winter Park is also home to some of the most highly acclaimed public and private schools for grades PreK-12.
This is a small town with big personality. If you’re looking to find a richly active community that can provide a wealth of knowledge in the arts, culture, and history alike, Winter Park just may be the place for you.
